Honesty....always the best policy?

Yesterday during a family gathering, my uncle-in-law asked me "so, how's work going lately?" My response was simply "I think I might get laid-off tomorrow. But I'm not messed up about it." SKREEEECCCCCHHHH.... there went the brakes on the conversation. I immediately felt guilty for not answering his question "um, fine, thank you."

If there is one thing I can't stand it is when people are fake. There are plenty of fake people that I know, and I like them alright, but sometimes I wish they would just "get real." These are the type of people who when asked about work they say "Oh I just love my job so much that I would do it for free except that I don't have to because my boss hands me a stack of crisp $100 bills every morning! Oh my life is just wonderful!" Don't you just want to smack those people? Come on!

Because of this I've always tried to be transparent (in my adult years anyway) with others.... And when people close to me ask how I'm doing, I try to tell the truth instead of just saying "fine" and moving on. One reason is that you never know how what you say will affect people. You never know when someone will be praying for you. You never know whose heart God lays you upon.

So, let me ask you this: When you say hi to someone and ask "how are you?" do you REALLY want to know, or is it just a formality that we have deemed polite and good manners?

Well, anyone who knows me at all, knows that I'm not a 'sugar-coater' so I agree with you 100%. However, sometimes on the phone at work I will say 'how are you' as a formality of conversation, not because I actually care. When I'm talking to friends or family though, I actually want to know the answer. Fake people drive me bananas...sometimes I wonder if they get exhausted with putting up a facade.

When I ask someone "how are you" I really want to know. Im a "chatty" person-I like to talk to people, hear their problems, talk about mine. Now I guess if Im totally exhausted, like at the end of almost EVERY day..I generally try to keep my questions to myself bc I know I dont have the energy to listen. Ask my poor husband! When he comes home from work, Im usually so tired I barely say a word to him-its OK, he's fine with it and understands.
But about fake people-I cant stand. I feel like I can see right thru them, honestly. They ask you a question, but you can tell they are already thinking about something else or just rushing you so they can talk about themselves. I will say, though, that I think alot of fake people are just insecure, so I try to give them the benefit of the doubt.

BTW,I like your blog background..I love birds!
